The tools of technical analysis are measurements and derivatives of price, for example on-balance volume, price oscillators, momentum measurements, Elliot Wave Theory and pattern recognition. A Technical Analyst develops and applies such tools for forecasting and timing trading and investing in financial instruments. Technical Analysis is a universal discipline.

The Swiss Association of Market Technicians (SAMT) is a not-for-profit organisation (Civil Code Art 60ff) of market analysis professionals in Switzerland founded in 1987.
The SAMT is a member of the International Federation of Technical Analysts (IFTA). Technical analysis is the study of prices and markets. It examines price behavior on an emprirical and statistical basis. It extends to the study of all published information on price trends, volatility, momentum, cycles and the interrelationship of prices, volume, breadth, sentiment and liquidity. A comprehensive understanting of technical analysis requires a knowledge of statistics and pattern recognition, a familiarity with financial history and cycles.
The SAMT encourages the development of technical analysis and the education of the financial community in the uses and applications of technical research and its value in the formulation of investment and trading decisions. The SAMT has a wide range of activities among which:
The organisation of meetings on a broad range of technical subjects encouraging the exchange of information and knowledge of technical analysis for the purpose of adding to the knowledge of the members.
SAMT has two classes of membership: member and affiliates. Members are recognized professionals who use technical analysis in investment and trading decisions. Affiliates are those who demonstrate an interest in the field of technical analysis.
The organisation of the possibility of taking the Diploma in International Technical Analysis (a professional certification named "Certified Financial Technician" (CFTe) and a Masters level degree called "Master of Financial Technical Analysis," (MFTA) in Switzerland. This exam is controlled by the IFTA.
SAMT has two classes of membership: member and affiliates, who pay yearly fees. Members can become a recognised professional technical analyst or a person using technical analysis in his investment and trading decisions. Affiliates are anyone person who has demonstrated an interest in the field of technical analysis.
